Questions to Ask at Your Vasectomy Consultation
Deciding to have a vasectomy is a significant decision, and it should be carefully thought out and researched. There are many conflicting views and opinions, and the decision on which provider you choose for the procedure can be baffling. Your consultation is the appointment where all of your questions and concerns will be discussed — so it pays to arrive prepared.
Here are the questions we encourage every patient to ask before moving forward.
How experienced is the surgeon?
If you decide to have a vasectomy, the single most important decision you should consider is who should perform your vasectomy. Investigating the experience of the surgeon performing the vasectomy is vital. You want to know how many procedures the urologist performs annually and how many he has done overall. What is the surgeon's complication rate and success rate? Dr. Lief has performed thousands of vasectomies since he began his practice in 1986.
Which technique will be used?
The vasectomy technique that Dr. Lief performs involves a single small incision, with the aid of twilight sleep or tranquilizers and a local anesthetic to numb the skin. Two to three dissolvable stitches close the opening, and they dissolve in about 10 days. There is no substitution for experience: an inexperienced urologist performing a no-scalpel technique would likely have a higher complication rate than an experienced surgeon performing a single-incision technique.
Will it be comfortable?
Dr. Lief performs vasectomies while the patient is under "twilight sleep". The vasectomy procedure is gentle and painless. For those who are at all anxious, most patients will have no memory of the vasectomy procedure. Ask what comfort options are available to you at your consultation.
Is a vasectomy right for me?
While vasectomies are reversible, the reversal is not always successful and can be expensive. Sperm banking is also a choice that can be explored. A vasectomy should be considered a permanent form of birth control, so think your decision through — and discuss alternatives with Dr. Lief during your consultation.
What will it cost?
The vasectomy procedure is very cost effective and offers the most reliable form of birth control. Usually it is almost completely covered by health insurance. For those without insurance, Dr. Lief also offers a cost effective vasectomy. Bring your insurance questions to your consultation.
Who will perform my procedure?
At some practices you may not know who will actually perform your procedure. At Lief Urology, Dr. Lief will always be the one performing your vasectomy. Your privacy will be respected and your needs will be addressed.
